PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION/PROPERTIES

Appearance: White to grey powder, almost insoluble in water.

Boiling Point/Melting Point: Nil/decomposes about 850°C.

Vapour Pressure: Not volatile (0 kPa at 20°C).

Specific Gravity: 2.3 to 2.6 (water =1).

Flashpoint: Non-combustible (does not burn).

Flammability Limits: Not applicable.

Auto-ignition Temperature: Not applicable.

Odour: No odour.

Solubility in Liquids: Soluble in Water at approximately 14mg per litre

Soluble in NH4Cl (ammonium chloride) and acids (with evolution of CO2 [Carbon Dioxide]).

OTHER PROPERTIES: May react vigorously with acids resulting in generation of carbon

Dioxide, a simple asphyxiant. Incompatible with alum and ammonium salts.

SHORT TERM HAZARDS (Acute Exposure)

Swallowed: Ingestion of large quantities can cause irritability, nausea, dehydration and constipation. Lethal dose for an adult is estimated at over 1kg. Considered to be of very low toxicity.

Eyes: Irritant. May cause damage due to heavy rubbing. May cause tears.

Skin: None known.

Inhaled: Dust will irritate the nose, throat and respiratory system. Symptoms include sneezing and slight nose irritation.

LONG TERM HAZARDS (Chronic)

Regular ingestion of more than 8g per day (Calcium Carbonate) reported to cause blood and kidney disorders. Prolonged unprotected exposure to airborne dust is not advisable due to the possibility of respiratory illness.

First Aid: If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or poisons information centre.

Swallowed: If swallowed, do NOT induce vomiting, administer water.

Eyes: If in eyes, hold eyes open, flush with copious amounts of water and seek medical attention.

Skin: If skin contact occurs, wash with water.

Inhaled: Blow nose and clear nasal passages with moist cotton wool

Personal Protection: Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhaling the dust. Personal protection to be selected from those recommended below, as appropriate to mode of use, quantity handled and degree of hazard:

Storage Advice: Store in a dry place. Keep container dry. Keep away from acids, alum and ammonium salts. Protect from physical damage. Clean up spills promptly, avoid secondary accidents.

Spills & Disposal: For disposal of small spillages, sweep up and remove with ordinary solid waste. For large spillages, contain using sand or earth, then transfer to salvage containers. Residues should be treated as for small spillages.

Caution: Before dealing with spillage, take necessary protective measures, inform others to keep at a safe distance. Avoid generating dust. Carefully sweep up into container and dispose of with ordinary garbage.
